Kann (Roasted Moong Dal Kheer)


Kann is a Goan sweet dish prepared for fast (upvaas). It is a thin kheer prepared by roasting moong dal. There are two variants: 1. With coconut milk and jaggery flavoured with turmeric leaves or cardamom. 2. With milk and sugar flavoured with cardamom. Cashew nuts and a pinch of salt may be added.

Measurement: 1 Cup = 180 ml

Ingredients:
  1. Moong dal - 1/2 cup
  2. Sugar - 1/2 cup
  3. Boiled milk - 350 to 500 ml (depending upon the consistency desired)
  4. Cardamom (powdered) - 2
  5. Cashew nuts - as per your requirement (optional)
Procedure:
  • Dry roast moong dal on low flame till it turns slightly brown and gives out roasted aroma.
  • Wash it after roasting and pressure cook on low to medium flame till 6 to 8 whistles.
  • Add sugar, milk and cashew nuts.
  • Simmer for 5 to7 min. Stir occasionally.
  • Put off the flame and add cardamom powder.
  • Serve warm or chilled.
