Udupi Coconut Chutney




Udupi coconut chutney is an accompaniment to the South Indian snacks.

Measurement: 1Cup =180 ml
Serves: 3

Ingredients:
  1. Coconut (scrapped) - 1 cup
  2. Roasted chana dal - 1 tsp
  3. Roasted and peeled peanuts - 1 to 2 tsp
  4. Green chillies - 1 to 2
  5. Coriander leaves - 1 tsp
  6. Curry leaves - 5
  7. Garlic cloves - 4 to 5 (optional)
  8. Ginger - 2 slices
  9. Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  10. Tamarind - half a marble size ball
  11. Sugar - a pinch
  12. Water - 1/2 cup
  13. Coconut oil - 1/2 tsp
  14. Salt to taste
For the tempering:
  1. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  2. Red chilly (broken) - 1
  3. Coconut oil - 1 tsp
  4. Curry leaves - 5 to 6
Procedure:
  • Heat 1/2 tsp oil in a tempering pan and fry curry leaves. 
  • Grind all the ingredients with water.
  • Heat 1 tsp coconut oil in a tempering pan and add mustard seeds, broken chilly and curry leaves. Pour it over the chutney.
  • Serve with idli / dosa / uttapam / medu vada / appe.
